so i gave him the note back

all i wrote was 'did you give me this note yesterday?? i'm blind and didn't see who put it in my desk :c'

but instead of giving it to him i hesitated like crazy. i didn't know whether to put it on his desk or give it to him through the inside of the desk like he did yesterday. by the time i was debating if i should just crumple the paper over and throw it at him, someone in my head took the wheel and shoved it in his desk

and unlike me!! he saw it immediately! all i could think about is how embarrassing not seeing it the first time for me was!!

anyway he wrote something down and tried to put it in my desk like last time but i had a bunch of crap in my desk so he struggled for a couple seconds before putting it on my stuff

before i go on, mind you this dude was shaking like a chihuahua on the fourth of july and to my knowledge he isn't THAT visibly nervous normally

i promise im not that scary!!

anyway he wrote 'yeah' THANK GOD 'it was late in class so i didn't have time to elaborate further'

so i mentally jumped with joy and was so relieved that he was the one who gave me that note only because that would be awkward for the both of us if he wasn't

so i wrote back 'oh lol' like an IDIOT 💔💔 but i made up for it by adding 'thank you though!! :3'

i gave it back to him, then i started working on another piece of art because now MY timbers were so shivered i may as well be swimming in the arctic

like ten minutes pass and i think that's the end of it because i didn't see him pass it back and i double checked my desk to make sure i wasn't blind today

but after a while i got the note back and he wrote 'yea i refuse to actually talk to (or compliment) people in a way that isn't over discord or something'

so i read it and went 'real!!' but i didn't write anything. i was gonna write back to him but i had no idea what to say to that . like i dont think i could write 'true dat' with my discord @ on the side liek???

so i set the note aside and began working on my work that i totally forgot about

then he got up and grabbed another sheet of paper. either he was gonna draw more characters or he was gonna write another drawing love letter

i ignored it though because i was trying really hard to actually pay attention to the stupid lesson

he folded the paper up and i think he tried to hand it to me but im too stupid for that 💔

then idk what he did but the paper ended up on the floor for i dunno how long until i felt it with my shoe, saw it, and picked it up because it sure as hell wasn't there before and i saw this insanely faint writing on the upper side

Does anyone else remember in 2008 when there was an entire national (international?) news story about the "first pregnant man" and it was just like... a random, non-famous trans man carrying a pregnancy because his wife couldn't get pregnant.

And like... he clearly wasn't the first trans man to get pregnant, wasn't even the first post-transition trans man to get pregnant, but it was such a big thing?

2008 was such a fucked year to be an LGBT person, especially an LGBT teen. Cause like, he was seen as an oddity, he was mocked, but peopel were like "Sure, fuck it, he's a pregnant man, I guess." (Not all! But like... the headlines called him a man, his manhood was sort of a face value thing in a lot of reporting?? Even the cruel, freakshow-esque reporting??)

And it was the year of Prop 8 in California. Gay marriage was a topic your civics teacher would think was fine having kids argue over in class. Regularly encountering flat out homophobic ads was liek... a common thing? But so were parodies mocking them. A Gathering Storm parodies were everywhere.

Looking back at that 15 years later, it just feels really... overwhelming to think about how much things have changed and how much they haven't. How some things are even worse than they were then.

Like... idk. The first pregnant man story just feels so emblematic of the moment (he wasn't the first pregnant man! it was normal to call him a man! it was also normal to mock him and calling his paternity photos disgusting on tv! people were voting on gay marriage rights during his pregnancy! the same people who would misgender him and call him a woman would then also be opposed to his marriage to his cis wife! who he was legally married to!) and it feels like such a curdling thing as well--how a fraught moment sitll felt optimistic (people were learning about trans people! the conversations sucked but they were happening! hey we lost prop 8 but we could rebound and we DID) and then all these years later here we are.

Idk, it's just really fucking sad. I just feel... grief over what that cultural moment could've led to but ultimately didn't. I was 15 then and I'm 30 now, a lifetime bisected by that single year and it's like... man, we have so much to show for it but also what the fuck do we have to show for it?

Did you read the new Yoongi Weverse article? It kinda talks about the D-DAY concert in terms of stage, setlist, and the vcrs. I was surprised that the chain hands in the background is Suga watching Suga. The reference to “first love” with the “brown piano”. WHY WASNT FIRST LOVE IN THE SETLIST?! 😭 I LOVE THAT SONG! It makes sense that it probably doesn’t fit in the overall storyline of the setlist but damn😢 I also can’t believe they weren’t sure about adding songs from the “Agust D” album. “The Last” is essential! It never fails to make me emotional. The shoulder grab 😢 The walk away is fitting. But it’s kinda sad to not have an official goodbye at the end of a concert. ANYWAY, here is what i wrote before i so rudely interrupted myself: AHHHH I LOVED THE ARTICLE. I LOVE YOONGI. I MISS THE D-DAY TOUR SO MUCH. 😩😭🥺😍 honestly, i love First Love, but i wasn't surprised that it was missing because it doesn't really match the vibe, overall? although!!! with a live band, he could have done anything to make it match the vibe, and i'm sure if he had included it, it would have been awesome. i personally really wanted to scream sing 28, but i was still very pleased with what i got.

i was actually very surprised to see The Last. a friend was saying she hoped he would play it and i was like "hmmm idk that one seems almost too personal..." but it fit PERFECTLY and GOD it was such a magnetic way to end the set. i remember seeing clips from it and being liek WHAT THE FUCK WHATTHEFUUUUUUUCCCCKK!!!!!!! i think it is perfect the way he did it, with doing some ending stuff between D-Day and Nevermind, introducing the band and dancers, and taking their bows then. i find it pulls me kind of out of the mood when they stop at the end to talk, so seeing him end on a powerful note and walk off was just asldjaslkdjalskjdaslda ugh so fucking perfect. i love him so much. everything about that set was so fucking good, and i could watch it again and again. 🥺🥺🥺

i really love having the chance to read about his thoughts and the plans, and hearing how the stage directors were planning. it was kind of clear to me, after a few watches, that they were stripping everything bare and that the fire was "burning everything away" in a way, and i loved hearing in their words what the plan was. it was so cool. i used to photograph live events, and i have seen well over 200 concerts, and i have never seen anything like that. 💜💜💜

I'd seen this story floating around a lot for yearssssss from the general search bar to ppls favorites lists but for some reason i'd never clicked on it until today. I can really say that i regret not reading it sooner. The first thought i had after finishing the story was "younger me was so stupid..." I guess the description scared me off but looking back idk how it couldve been scary at all. I guess i should attritube that to my low level reading comprehension at the time but anyway

Goldberry is kinda mother (or father idk)... they're like a major diety in nejitenism everyone knows them and respects them. Their work was revolutionary.. its mandatory curriculum at all schools in nejitenlandia. Ive always wished i was born sooner to witness the golden age of nejiten but also that would mean id be old af now (no offense). That reminds me.. i was gonna say i wonder how goldberry is now and how they're doing now (are they alive?!) but clicking on their ffn page.... they literally publiushed a genshin impact story like 4 months ago bruh

ANYWAY here is my official review of "Kaleidoscope"

At first i was just gagged at how good the writing was. Like the opening scene scared me cuz it seemed wordy (im stupid) but im glad i fought through it (theres nothing to fight thru its pretty light if ur not stupid). They are so descriptive and smart in their writing. Theyre especially good at creating rly specific tones.. kinda withdrawn and melancholy which perfectly fits neji in that time in the story. Ya so i was just gagged at how intelligent the writing is. Its a great example of how tone can be used to characterize

The story itself is so perfect for me cuz i lowk hate ooc super sweet kekekuku stories (SOMETIMES) but this was so smooth and intimate without being all up in ur pussy idk how else to describe it but it just fit nejiten's dynamic so well cuz u know... theyre not kekekuku but are still scarily close in their own way

I think ppl are scared of writing friends to lovers cuz how do u even write someone realizing their feelings. Usually its like the guy sees the girl in a dress or something and is like wow😍😍😍😍😍💦💦💦💦💦i actually like you 😍😍😍😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️ but here its a very thought out and natural realization that you dont even realize how sudden it is (DOES THAT EVEN MAKE SENSE):

"After about half an hour they would settle, each of them slipping off into dreamland. Neji, however, did not that night. There was a thought turning in his mind, taking on different shapes as he added to it. Finally, when he was sure he knew what it meant, he turned over, his milky eyes finding her shape in the darkness."

This was so good liek instead of actually painstakingly rifling through his thoughts its just a few short sentences in summary. I guess the main point is the outcome rather than the actual inner turmoil or wtvr. Actually we dont even know if it was turmoil, it certainly isnt phrased like one. "Thought turning," "taking on different shapes as he added to it," its just an eventual conclusion after thorough exploration. So cute im kekekuku and then the next line..

"Neji knew."

It's so short but so meaningful. Like ya. He knows. He doesnt fight it or zealously double down on it. He just lets it sit and exist. Nejiten ffn is famous for letting things just sit and exist, its a very hmm... idk the right word... professional? Withdrawn? ship... idk if u get it u get it

It even says it in the story, its a surprising "but not unwelcome" revelation. He himself doesnt even know what to think about it but its okay because things will happen when they happen

Looking back its a bittersweet ending knowing how nejiten turned out liekk i kinda feel bad for the author.. little did they know what the future held.... but im still glad they wrote and kept this story out there like thankGOD

I have a million more thoughts but school is beating my ass and i havent even started my math hw i just needed to get this out of my system

Oh also i would pair this story with the song "seasons" by wave to earth. Esp the beginning. Its a super slow descension into the main melody but when the main song hits IT HITS and it kinda reminded me of this story. Nejiten's fall into something more is super gradual and slow and barely noticeable like on a random rainy night in a random inn far away but IT HITS.... trust me....(i sound crazy) also the second part of the song "i cant be ur love im afraid ill ruin ur life" ... iykyk (i dont know)

But ya thats all i have for now final rating 10/10 so cute so kekekuku so nejiten so intelligent

i started writing this little thing, to be referenced as "mudkipz" from now on, back in december 2018. that is obviously a long time ago. i usually don't come back to wips this old, because i don't remember what my intentions were for them. so, finishing this was a super bizarre experience for me, and i'm going to document that here lest i forget it, too.

welcome to "so i herd u liek mudkipz" behind the scenes.

since "mudkipz" is so old, here's all that happened between its conception and its "release", in chronological order:

my pet fish that inspired this fic died

i left the fandom

i stopped keeping fish altogether and forgot how to do it

i rejoined the fandom

i had to research how to keep fish in order to finish the fic

the website that originated the meme "mudkipz" is named after apparently imploded on itself or something

when i abandoned "mudkipz", i had about 3k words written for it. i had every intentions to finish it, as i do with all my stories, but the last work i did on it was back in June 2019.

this was probably to copy a piece of it for the @ffxv-tarot-project contributor spotlight, which you can find here, rather than any actual writing progress. why i chose to use a wip, and this wip in particular, for that is anyone's guess, idk man.

that being said, the last thing i wrote for ""mudkipz" was the scene where noctis discovers the fish to be sick. most everything that follows is new material.

i have no actual recollection of where this particular story was meant to go.

i was clearly setting up the conflict between noctis and prompto regarding the crownsguard training, but it was hardly ever directly mentioned in the original draft. when i first looked at it after all that time, i thought, oh. hey. this thing is nearly done, i might as well finish this. i hammered out additional 2k words in one evening.

the rest of "mudkipz", at that time, went like this:

noctis goes to the fish store, gets the much needed fish equipment, and goes back home

he sets up the tank with prompto and gladio

after gladio leaves, they have a heart to heart about prompto's reasoning for joining the crownsguard

the fish works its magic, they get together, the end

there was no conflict. which would be fine for a lot of stories, but in this one it was an issue for a couple of reasons:

a) it's me and i live off angst, even if it's light and tiny b) why would i set up a conflict if it never went anywhere c) the fish narrative wouldn't make sense—it's clearly a parallel to noct and prompto's friendship. the wellness of the fish mirrors the wellness of their relationship, and they can't heal the relationship until the fish is healed

so, i now had 5k words of fanfiction that i thought would be finished soon, and suddenly needed massive editing—not only of the newly added bits, but of the pre-existing content as well.

for example, in the scene where ignis drives noctis home from prompto's apartment, the draft goes a bit differently compared to the finished version.

the original scene could have worked in the first version of the story, where the conflict isn't conflicting, or if the fish subplot wasn't there. now that i was rewriting the narrative to fit these things, i quickly realized that i didn't want ignis to explain prompto's reasoning to noctis—that should be prompto's job. otherwise, ignis would have said that, and noctis would have been like, oh, fine, that makes sense i guess.

these sorts of edits made me write additional 2k words, and put "mudkipz" at more than 7k. which is more than double the length of the original unfinished draft, and pretty fucking hilarious given that i thought it was nearly finished.

it's definitely not the story i wanted to write back in 2018. there were bits and pieces about prompto's home life that lead me to believe i wanted to explore some of that as well, but obviously it never went anywhere, and i removed them altogether.

i forgot the original story, and it makes me a bit sad that i let it die like this. so, cheers to unfinished writing and the stories that die with us, and then are reborn. i guess?

more little trivia:

prompto the second is a fancy goldfish, specifically a veiltail. there was a line in the draft that mentioned he and prompto shared "a color scheme", so you can imagine him as very pale yellow/gold.

ao3 doesn't have a fishkeeping tag. i can't be the only person who ever wrote about fishkeeping—and "mudkipz" IS a story about fishkeeping. it was directly inspired by my first serious efforts in keeping fish, which is much harder to do than people often think it is, and definitely serves as a little public service announcement.

the dialogue noctis and prompto have about an unnamed video game they've been playing ("I couldn't believe the ending, bro. No spoilers, but it tries to convince you it's a happy end, but it's not a happy end.") is directly about ffxv itself lmao forever my biggest gripe with the game.

i debated how out or in character it is for noctis to initiate any sort of serious talk with prompto. in canon, noctis is more often than not pretty dismissive of things if they require any form of emotional input or vulnerability. he does, however, indulge prompto on more than one occasion. he indulges him in the motel scene, he indulges him in episode prompto. he quite often indulges him in random banter dialogue. prompto 100% does the brunt of the hard, emotional work in their friendship (and if i was a better writer, i would explore all the ways in which prompto emotionally regulates the entire chocobro dynamic, but alas), but noctis always meets him at least halfway. so i wasn't too worried about it. i think noctis actually caring for the fish and cleaning the tank is much more out of character.

prompto the second definitely gets a couple more upgrades to his habitat over the course of his and noct's shared life. a bigger tank, possibly even a tank mate. he probably doesn't survive the fall of insomnia, tho, because i think noct's apartment would be the second thing to get ransacked by the empire, and even if it didn't... who's there to take care of a fish? :(
